History of Childrens Costume – Costume Reference: Until the eighteenth century children’s costume was scaled down replicas of adult dress, slightly less formal, with just a few adaptations and additions such as aprons and leading strings, but nevertheless restricting the movement of the child. In our generation, when children have so much freedom, it is strange to think that as recently as the eighteenth century how restricted they were. One of the greatest influences in freeling children from these restricting clothes was John Locke, a philosopher. He did not believe that children should be jsut replicas of their parents, but individuals with your own demands.
