The River Neckar, longer than the thames, and with many tributaries, covers a great deal of country, passing through wooded and rocky scenery, vineyards, and industrial areas. The indormation about the Neckar that most amazes strangers is that the automobile comes from here, and indeed was invented here twice over: in Mannheim by Carl Benz, and in stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt by Gottlieb Daimler. The proud claim that this valley was also the birthplace of that politically so influential philosopher Hegel, or of the poets Hölderlin and Schiller makes less of an impact.
